VICTORIAN-based building materials company Telfords Building Systems is the latest business to choose Wollongong as its state base of operations.

And the company's NSW manager Peter Spinney could not be happier.

Mr Spinney and his wife Glenda decided to move to Wollongong to live 10 years ago.

But the move meant a long return trip each day to Telfords' western Sydney office.

"I began establishing a client base in the Illawarra and South Coast and as it grew the company decided Wollongong would be the ideal place to relocate operations because of the growing market," Mr Spinney said.

"The company's headquarters are in Shepparton, but the market and operating benefits of moving to Wollongong were quickly understood.

"The move carried out last week has been supported by all our existing customers, who say Wollongong is a great place.

"I was absolutely rapt with the decision, not only because of the significant cut in travelling time, but the people in this region seem to be more friendly.

"I put that down to the more relaxed coastal lifestyle of the region, which attracted us to come and live here in the first place."

Mr Spinney said he did not believe the city council corruption inquiry would discourage investment in the region.

"I think it has been a positive for Wollongong because people can now see the corruption being weeded out," he said.
